About this plan

Cutting a grocery bill usually means cutting variety. This week avoids that by leaning on the three things that are cheap per calorie in India — atta, rice and dal — and then spending the remaining budget on vegetables rather than on paneer, dry fruit or packaged food.

There is no paneer, no cashew paste and no cream anywhere in this plan. What replaces them is technique: a proper tadka, onion cooked down properly, and lemon or curd at the end. Sunday still gets halwa and puri.

The ₹1,500 figure is for a family of four at local-market vegetable prices. Buying from a delivery app instead will push it closer to ₹1,900.

What makes it work

  • About ₹1,500 a week for four people, all 21 meals included
  • Uses seasonal, low-cost vegetables — lauki, cabbage, brinjal, bhindi
  • No paneer, cream or cashew paste anywhere in the week
  • Thursday breakfast deliberately uses up Wednesday night’s leftover roti

Questions about this plan

How is ₹1500 possible for a whole week?
Most of the cost sits in atta, rice and dal, which are cheap per meal. Vegetables here are chosen for price rather than novelty, and there is nothing packaged in the list. Buying vegetables at a local mandi rather than through a delivery app is the single biggest lever.
Is there enough protein in a plan this cheap?
There is dal at eleven of the fourteen lunches and dinners, plus rajma, chole, besan and sprouts across the week. It works out to roughly 45–55 g per adult per day — adequate, though below what a high-protein plan targets.
What should I buy differently in summer or monsoon?
Swap lauki and cabbage for whatever gourd is cheapest that week — tinda, tori or pumpkin all cook the same way and slot into the same dinners without changing the grocery list much.
