About this plan

This week is written for the six-to-twelve age group and for the specific problem of food coming back uneaten. Chilli is low throughout, textures are soft or crisp rather than in between, and vegetables mostly arrive inside something — a frankie, a cutlet, a fried rice, a pasta sauce.

It is not a week of junk food dressed up. Dal appears four times, khichdi and curd rice both make an appearance, and the pizza and pasta are made at home with real vegetables. What it avoids is the standoff over a katori of plain sabzi.

Grocery quantities are written for two adults and two children. Adults eating the same meals will want a sharper pickle or chutney alongside.

What makes it work

  • Mild throughout — chilli powder is used sparingly and can be dropped entirely
  • Vegetables arrive inside frankies, cutlets, fried rice and pasta sauce
  • Ten of the 21 meals also work as a school lunchbox
  • Paneer, curd, milk and dal keep protein and calcium steady through the week

Questions about this plan

Which of these meals pack well into a school lunchbox?
The paneer paratha roll, veg fried rice, curd rice, pasta, biryani, frankie, cutlets, aloo tikki with roti, pizza toast and khichdi all travel well. Pack anything crisp separately from anything wet so it stays crisp.
My child will not eat visible vegetables. What do I do?
Grate rather than chop for the cutlets, frankie and pasta sauce, and blend the tomato soup smooth. Carrot, peas, capsicum and cauliflower all disappear into those four dishes without changing how they taste.
Is this plan suitable for a toddler?
Partly. Khichdi, curd rice, dal with ghee rice, idli and pancakes suit toddlers as written. The frankie, manchurian and pizza toast are better held back for older children, and portions should be roughly halved.
